Misery's Child
Book I of the Cadian Chronicles

Lillitha's entire life has been preparation for a consecrated marriage to the Holy Shallan, ruler of the Realm that unifies the Twelve Kingdoms. If she is chosen from among the candidates by the Bene priests and Cadian sisters, she will save her once-noble family from starvation, and enter a life of privilege and luxury.
All she must do is bear a son....
Her Cadian tutor, Yanna, has taught her much of the sisterhood's magic, but it is her younger sister, Marta, who is the stronger "tadomani" — a seer with the ability to read those around her with frightening skill.
Already burning with ambition, Marta's only interest is in snaring Tomack, the eldest son of the kingdom's wealthiest merchant.
The Shallan is past his one hundredth summer: ill, half-crazed and desperate for an heir. The palace is full of intrigue and betrayal as Chancellor Paglia slyly siphons away more and more of the Shallan's powers. Osane, the head of the Cadian Sisters, is the only one who dares to stand in Paglia's way.
As the time of the Choosing draws near, Lillitha finds herself once more in the arms of a childhood friend, Scearce. The shy boy has grown into manhood with all the accomplishments befitting a prince, but he has never forgotten Lillitha.
Lillitha must make a terrible choice.... will she risk it all, for love?

Misery's Flight
Book II of the Cadian Chronicles

When Lillitha fled from a cold marriage to the aging and ill Holy Shaman, she risked everything. Too late, she finds out just how much her choice has cost her - and those she loves.
When the Shallan's army marched to bring her back to the palace, she and Prince Scearce are forced to hide behind the walls of his kingdom as the Realm is torn apart by civil war.
The House Kirrisian of Lillitha's family is abolished, its name never to be spoken again. Her sister, Marta, is left alone and friendless.
With nowhere to turn, Marta, too, is forced to make desperate choices that will lead her far down a path she never imagined.
Can love survive the most terrible guilt and grief? Can a woman sell her body without selling her soul? Can a child born under a curse ever escape the shadow of her parents' past?

Misery's Curse
Book III of the Cadian Chronicles

When her father's kingdom finally falls, Leah and her protector, Petri, find shelter with a gypsie tribe passing through the countryside. Leah knows that Lord General Yearick is cutting a bloody path through the Realm searching for her, and that her life depends on how skillfully she can blend into the life of the gypsie camp.
For a time, Leah finds the joy of acceptance and belonging in a new family. But as she approaches womanhood, her power is growing stronger, and she has no idea how to control her frightening visions.
When tragedy strikes, Leah finds a surprising ally and safety in the unlikeliest of all places: the palace on Omana Teret, as a Cadian novice.
Meanwhile, Chancellor Paglia has discovered Marta working as a courtesan. When he claims her for his own, she has no choice but to submit. Can she keep her sanity as he subjects her to his debased appetites — or can she beat him at his own game?
Cadia-dedre Osane helps Leah to focus her gifts, and together they uncover terrible secrets. Is Chancellor Paglia plotting against the shallana breda? Is he somehow responsible for the lack of a male heir? And what is his relationship with Fortulla, the notorious witch of the Old Ways?

Misery's Disguise
Book IV of the Cadian Chronicles

Leah, cursed at birth for her parents' sins, must hide her identity from everyone, even those she loves. The Most Holy Shallan still seeks vengeance for her mother's betrayal, but it is his scheming chief minister, Chancellor Paglia, who most desires to inflict a terrible retribution upon her child. He has set the most feared man in all of the Realm, Lord General Yearick, also called the Bloody Butcher, on a quest to find her and bring her back to Omana Teret.
What Paglia does not know is that Osane, the leader of the Cadian Order, has brought Leah into the Palace itself as a novitiate. The Cadian sisters know that Leah is a powerful tadomani — a seer whose visions and premonitions may hold the key to the future of the Realm itself.
But can Leah unravel the mysteries of the visions that threaten her newfound love with Devyn, a Bene acolyte?
Will her aunt, Marta, now Paglia's unwilling mistress, find a way to exact her own revenge for her father's murder and her violation?

He enlists another thief, Tolrode, to help him, but the journey through the mountain passes is hard and dangerous. When their little party stumbles across the dreaded mountain bandits, everything changes in ways Leah never could have imagined.
